FANCIERS’ CLUB

ANNUAL SHOW BIRD CLASSES JUDGED The Dunedin Fanciers’ Club decided to hold its annual show this year in spite ' of the war, and the excellent entries justified its decision. The bird classes, which were judged yesterday, were well patronised by exhibitors, and although there was a small reduction in the number o/ entries over 810 birds were benched, and the quality on the whole was good. Budgerigars and canaries were less promineni than they have been for some years past, but other classes showed a slight Increase in numbers. The show will be continued to-day, when the dogs will be judged, and the stake classes will be paraded to-morrow. CANARIES The Norwich canary classes carried two South Island championships, one for a cinnamon or green canary (open class), which was won by Mr W. McCrombie, and one for a buff canary, which was won by Mr D. Auld. Both these exhibitors were most successful in the open and breeders’ classes, Mr McCrombie being awarded seven first prizes and five seconds. Mr Auld took seven firsts and six seconds. Other prominent exhibitors In these sections were Messrs F. M. Hanan. E. Tomkins, and A. Day. In the novice classes Mr H. Russell was the only exhibitor, and was awarded first prize in each class. The outstanding competitors in the Yorkshire r section were Mr W. J. Jarvis, Mr J. Pratt, and Mrs P. Haddon. There were'no championships in this section, ' but Mr Jarvis was awarded no fewer than seven, firsts, two seconds, and two thirds, while Mr Pratt and: Mrs Haddon took the majority of the remaining places in the breeders’ and open classes. Canaries exhibited by Mr K. D. Wright proved most successful in the novice classes. Entries in the rollers section were small but of good quality, and the prize-winners were remarkably fine birds. Mr A. , B Smith, With two firsts and two seconds, was the most successful exhibitor. POULTRY The utility poultry classes carried one New Zealand championship, for a white Leghorn, and It was won by Mr M. Ronald’s single comb cockerel, an outstanding bird. Second place went to Mr H. H. Lethaby. These two exhibitors and Mr C. Bartley, scored well among the Leghorns. The South Island championship rfor Anconas was awarded to. a pullet owned by Mrs W. Jarvis, who also took a first with a hen of the same breed. The Orpington section was a small one and was dominated by Mr H. G. Siipe, who took two firsts and two thirds. Mr R. Smeaton and Mrs C. McKenzie were also prominent. Mr Lethaby won three firsts in the Light Sussex classes and Mr R. Mitchell gained most success in the section devoted to Minorcas. In the fancy classes one South Island championship was allotted to the club, being awarded for the best Hamburg. It went to a bird exhibited by Mrs R. Craig, who won several other firsts and seconds. Mr R. Mitchell was the only exhibitor among the Andalusians and he took four firsts, while Mr H. Booth swept the poo) in the Silkies classes. .There were good entries in the Old English game classes, which did not carry any championships, and two exhibitors met with outstanding success. They were Mr d’A. S. Grut and Mr R. W. Brown, the former taking five firsts and four seconds, and the latter six first and three seconds, Messrs S. F. Greenslade, T. Whitson and T. E. O’Connor were also prominent. • ' A modem game bantam, benched by Mr H. M. Brownlie, took a New Zealand championship and this- exhibitor and Mr P. T. Robinson took several other awards. In the variety classes, which attracted good entries,, Messrs J. P. Smith and Son won a South Island championship with a black Pekin cock. Messrs P. T. Robinson, J. E. Robertson, T. Padman and J- Beaton were the chief prize-winners among these classes. The old English game bantam section was dominated by Messrs S. E. Bichan, J. E. Robertson and F. A. Marriner.

PIGEONS The fancy pigeon section proved to be one of the most popular in the show and th< Various classes were well patronised. The Lumsden exhibitor, Mr L. F. Soper, met with outstanding success with a wide variety of entries ranging from Pigmy pouters to magpies and tumblers. He took no fewer than 20 first awards as well as several minor placings. ’ He was the only competitor in the classes for magpies, in which he won five firsts, but in most of the other sections he won against good competition. A New Zealand award was allotted the club for the best baldheaded tumbler and it was won by Mr T. W. Richmond with a hen. This exhibitor also won eight other first awards and several seconds. Next to Mr Soper, Mr J. Wells was the most successful entrant, taking 12 firsts and half-a-dozen seconds in the Tumbler Satinette and Modena classes. Other prominent prize-winners were Messrs W. H. Turvey (pouters), G. Thomson (Norwich Croppers.), E: N. Rae and ft. W. Brown (Dragoons). J. H. Fahey J. E. Robertson and Miss B. Fahey (Tumblers). ’ ‘ "■"■■■ ' Entries in the various classes under the homing pigeons sections were fair, and the outstanding feature was the success of Messrs J. and R. Penno. In the mileage and colour classes Mr J. Penno was awarded 10 first prizes,- six seconds and seven thirds, while in the boys’ classes Mr R. Penno, who was the only exhibitor, gained 12 firsts. The South Island championship for a homer cock, flown class, was wort by a pigeon owned by Mr M. Anderson, who was also prominent in the mileage classes. Messrs J. Still and A. E. Morris were other owners whose birds were highly successful in these classes. BUDGERIGARS AND FINCHES Entries in the budgerigar section were considerably fewer than last year and many of the classes were confined to two birds. The quality, however, was probably better than at previous shows. Mr F. W. ,H. Barnett won the only New Zealand championship offered, his yellowing green cock taking the award in a class of 10 entries. Second place went to Mr R. E. Mahon. A yellow cock bird owned by Mr A. C. Pratt was awarded a South Island championship in a class of six birds. The major placings in the open classes were fairly evenly divided between the 15 or so exhibitors, but Mrs J. S. McGilvary was the most prominent. Other prize-winners were Messrs R. E. Mahon, A. C. Pratt, L. A. Cockerlll, W. Anderson, R. J. Tyrrell, T. LrMcLean and Mrs P. Haddon. The small novice section was dominated by Messrs W. Shieffelbein and W. Belcher. The classes devoted to finches and foreign birds were small numerically and Messrs A. R. Harris (British finches), R. J. Tyrrell, S. Carr and A. R. Harris (foreign finches), and J. Farlane (lovebirds) were the most successful competitors. SPECIAL CUPS G. H. Bradford Cup (best fancy pigeon): T. W. Richmond. D.F.C.
