Drunkenness William Alfred Cyril Rose, a statutory first offender for drunkenness, was fined 20s. in default 24 hours’ imprisonment Sailors in Trouble Two Norwegian sailors, Aage Arnesen and Torleif Aslaksen, both aged 21, appeared on a charge of having deserted from their ship at Christchurch on June 7. After they had explained through their captain that they had had no intention of deserting, but had “had a few drinks, and forgotten to be back by, sailing time,’’ the magistrate sentenced them to seven days’ imprisonment and ordered that they should be placed on board their ship before it sailed.
