THE HOME GUARD
QUESTION OF COMPULSORY SERVICE POSSIBLE DEBATE IN HOUSE (Special) WELLINGTON, June 10. An opportunity for the House to discuss the reorganisation of the Home Guard, with a view to making service in it or in some other branch of the emergency reserve corps compulsory, was sought by Mr W. J. Poison (Opposition, Stratford) in an urgent question which he asked the Minister of 'Defence, Mr F. Jones, in the House of Representatives this afternoon. ' "• \ ■ •-'■ ■ Mr Jones' said the question "was really one for Mr Nash as Leader of the House. He would be pleased, however, to take an early opportunity of discussing with him whether it would be possible for arrangements to be made for such a debate. A request for. more adequate funds to cover the cost of the necessary work carried out by the Home Guard was contained in a notice of a question given by Mr J. A. Lee (Democratic Labour. Grey Lynn) 6n behalf of Mr W. E. «Barnard (Democratic Labour, Napier). The question was directed to the Minister of Finance, Mr Nash, and in a note to it Mr Lee said he was credibly informed that in one town the Home Guard had been required to provide through its own efforts for the cost of 30,000 cement bags and about 10,000 feet of heavy timber for use in an essential work of public importance.
