"BUMP UP" IN RATES
TO THE EDITOR
Sir,—Advertisements by the Labour Party seek to convey the impression that the rates will be higher next year if the Citizens' Association candidates get into power. This is absolutely false, as Messrs McMillan, Munro, and Walls full'-well know, as they were present at the council meeting when the rates were fixed. It is true that the "general rate" is higher, but the total rates are reduced by one penny in the pound. Our would-be doctor Mayor knows that the suggestion of higher rates is mere " piffle." It is unworthy of one who seeks to pose as " impartial "! The Labour Council reduced rates, but imposed a "tap tax" and raised funds to the tune of over £130,000 while it was in power, and will be forced to do the same sort of thins again if the citizens reinstate them! I challenge Dr McMillan to deny that the total rates will be lower next year if a non-Labour council is elected.—l am. etc., Play Fair.
