NEW AIRCRAFT DEVICE
TESTS OF THE " CONTRAPROP " (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, May 12. The aviation correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says that bench and flight tests have been made of the " contraprop," or co-axial oppositely 'rotating airscrew, with controllable pitch blades, which is intended considerably to improve the efficiency of aircraft. The "contraprop" can be visualised as two airscrews close together mounted on two shafts, one running inside the other and turning in opposite directions. It possesses many advantages. The diameter of the airscrew is reduced, for which reason undercarriage design problems are reduced, especially with tricycle undercarriages. In addition such airscrews will prevent the plane from pulling to the right or the left when taking off, and they give planes greater manoeuvrability in the air.
