NO GERMAN AID
IRAQI REBEL LEADER FOLLOWERS LOSING HEART WHOLESALE DESERTIONS (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, May 12. The special correspondent of the Daily Telegraph in Iraq says it is becoming increasingly evident that there will be no German aid for Rashid AH, whose following is beginning to break up. Iraqi conscripts southward of Al Qurna—the traditional site of the Garden of Edenare deserting wholesale rather than continue to serve Rashid All. Iraqi forces in the Habbaniyah area have apparently lost heart for fighting. They are now 11 miles from the defence perimeter of the R.A.F. cantonment, and show no signs of doing anything except stay there unless pushed out even further.
British troop;- who have encountered the Iraqis declare they have no real determination in their resistance. This lack of spirit tends to confirm the impression that Rashid Ali's antiBritish activities are not receiving 'heapproval of. the Iraq nation, particularly the army as a whole. An official Berlin News Agency despatch from Beirut declared that the exiled Grand Mufti of Jerusalem has issued a proclamation to the Arab people demanding a Mohammedan holy war against Britain.
