Patriotic Fund.— At the last meeting of the Patriotic Committee the secretary announced that £l7l had been collected in the district. Soldiers Entertained.—There was a large gathering of friends and relatives in the Outram Town Hall recently, when Sergeant Pilot J. Bathgate was the guest of honour. Mr Townrow was chairman, Mr M. Bathgate was M.C., and Mr Irving provided the music. Dr Wylie made a presentation on behalf of the district, and also handed the'guest a knitted garment from the W.D.F.U. Mr I. Little spoke on behalf of the Returned Soldiers' Association. An amusing play, " Three Young Ladies in a Temper," was presented by the Outram Drama Club. Those taking part were Misses K. Anderson, E. Hendry and M. Garraway, Mrs Irving and Mr D. Hara. A gift from the district has been forwarded to Seaman V. Kent, who was unable to be present, and a similar token is to be presented to Pilot Officer W. Kofoed at a function at Berwick. St. John Ambulance Brigade.—Mr Wilkinson, district superintendent, and Mr Swanson, instructor, recently paid a visit to the local brigade. Some time was spent at stretcher drill, and a demonstration of the Thomas splint was given. Rag Drive.—The local company of Girl Guides carried out a rag drive in the district in the interests of the Air Force. A liberal response was made. Mounted Rifles. —The Taieri troop of the Mounted Rifles, which now numbers 32, carried out an attack practice on " The Downs " property at Outram at its recent narade. Afterwards instruction was given in company drill.
Emergency Precautions Committee.—At the last meeting of this committee Mr Southgate was appointed secretary. Home Guard.—The, local Home Guard has obtained a number of rifles, enabling musketry drill to be carried out at parades.
