FORBURY PARK MEETING

GOLD BAR SUCCESSFUL BUSH LADDIE BEATS TAN JOHN WIN FOR SPECIAL EDITION

The Forbury Park Trotting Club's winter meeting opened in fine but cold weather. There was a very large attendance, and the totalisator returns showed a substantial increase on last year's figures, in spite of the fact that a number of intending investors were shut out during the day. The track provided fairly sound going, but was on the slow side. Gold Bar registered his eighth win when he won the Ritchie Memorial Handicap, and other wins seem sure to come his way. The son of Grattan Loyal scored an easy win, but the balance of the events on the card provided some interesting racing Bayfield Handicap Royal Worthy, who started favourite for the Bayfield Handicap, had to put up a good performance 1o win. He moved off, but then broke up and lost about CO yards. Westcliff began best and led Highrate past, the stand. With five furlongs to go Royal Worthy had made up ground. Westcliff was still in charge from Highrate, Orphan Bingen, Traveltone, Suspense and Lee Berry. Royal Worthy raced up and joined Westcliff. They came on together, and Royal Worthy won by a head. Suspense was eight lengths away, with Traveltone, Lee Berry, Highrate and Orphan Bingen next. Domain Handicap Colecn Travis soon took charge in the Domain Handicap, and led Flying Peggy. Cathay and Serapeum with a lap to go. Glenlee, who was fairly handy at that stage, went to a break. Coleen Travis continued in charge, and finally scored a comfortable win by three lengths from Cathay, who beat Serapeum by three lengths. Lustrous and Dan's Pride were next. Beach Handicap Shadow Maid was made a good favourite for the Beach Handicap, but got hopelessly boxed and broke up when pulled back to get out two furlongs and a-half from home. Loyalist took up the role of pacemaker, and won from end to end. He was followed by Shady Glen and Joan Conquest, but they could not put up a serious challenge. Rey Chimes and Lady Nessa were next. Ritchie Memorial Handicap Although Gold Bar completely dominated the situation in the Ritchie Memorial Handicap, the pool was larger than last year's total. Gold Bar at once shot away to a big lead, and made it a one-horse race. He won easing up by two lengths from Gold Bank, who put in a fast run over the final three furlongs. Worthy Need finished five lengths away, and Bronze Eagle was next. Victory Handicap Ronald Logan was not too well placed during the Victory Handicap, but made a run on the outside in the last halfmile, and, racing to the front, won by three lengths from Embargo, who beat Tndian Clipper by two lengths. Drummer Boy and Passing By were next, followed by Slieve Donard. St. Clair Handicap Bush Laddie was in charge of the field for the St. Clair Handicap six furlongs from home. In the last half-mile he was followed by Tan John, who put in a strong challenge in the run home, but the favourite stalled him off and won by a head. Manna's Son was two lengths away, and Pilot Peter was next, four lengths away. The others were out of it. Renown Handicap All Gallant, the favourite for the Renown Handicap, took charge at the outset of the race and led April Direct, Ghandi, Night Beam and Turco with a lap to go. There ,was some crowding when leaving the straight, and All Gallant lost his place. Warfield ran into the lead going to the far turn. Warfieid led into the straight from Night Beanv Channel Fleet, April Direct and Direct Bell. When well into the straight Worthy Cross came with a good run on the extreme outside and got up to beat Marque by two lengths. Direct Bell was a length and a-half away third, and Warfield was next, followed by April Direct. Flying Handicap

FIELDS FOR TO-DAY SHADOW MAID A PROSPECT Good fields will be seen out again today, and, as the track conditions will probably be similar to what they were on Saturday, first day's form should be the best guide for those who try to locate dividend-payers. Two horses who appeared to be unlucky in the running on Saturday were Shadow Maid and Turco, and it will occasion no surprise if they finish in the money to-day. May 10 The weather was fine but cold for the Ashburton races, and the track was dead following on rain and frost Sir Frederick, Flagman, and Fundy Bay set the pace in the Longbeach Hurdles. Flagman was in trouble half a mile from home, where Fundy Bay also started to drift, while a little further on Donadea ioined Sir Frederick in the lead. Sir Frederick drew out in the straight, beating Donadea easily by two lengths. Dividend, who came on with a good run in the straight to beat Fundy Bay for third is nearing his best form. Waka blundered and lost his rider at the last hurdle, after being last all the way. Ladv Derby ran a fine race for an easy win in the Eiffel ton Hack Handicap. Retrogression was smartest out. and soon had Treasurer and Miss Waitarere in close attendance. Rawhamai joined in a little further on. and was with Treasurer in the lead at the entrance to the straight. Lady Derby, after being near the tail of the field early, moved up on the rails, was on terms with Rawhamai a furlong from the post and won easily. Treasurer came on with a late run, missing second place by a head. Eulogist improved his position at the home turn and finished fourth, with Guilder close up. Retrogression collapsed in the run home. Rainstorm soon took charge in the Selma Trot with Native Man, Warform, Young Rey. Turret, and Swagger Jack handy. Swagger Jack. Young Rey, and Warform were showing the way at the five-furlong post, but at the home turn Cinchona had run up fast to take third place behind Swagger Jack and Native Man. with Turret and Spencer Volo next. Turret challenged a furlong from the post and went on to win decisively by two lengths, while Swagger Jack stalled off a strong run from Spencer Volo by a head. Native Man and Cinchona headed the others. Don't Forget led all the way and made an exhibition of the field in the Ashburton Handicap. Not Out, Kings Toast, and Ferriby followed him early, but after two furlongs Shikari ran up to third place. The order of the three leaders was unchanged half a mile from home, with Cherokee and King's Toast next. Don't Forget had a lead of four lengths at this stage, and he was not troubled to win by three lengths. Prudent Prince, coming from a long way back, easily gained second from Knight Commander, another who arrived on the scene with a late run. Not Out hung on to beat Cherokee for fourth. King's Toast was never dangerous. Hurry Girl broke her spell of hard luck with an all-the-way-win in the Trial Stakes, with most of the big field well strung out at the finish. My Abbey, Force, Princess Myosotis, and Espionage followed her early, Espionage taking second place at the entrance to the straight, where Good Scout also joined in. Hurry Girl held on without trouble to win by three lengths, while Espionage just stalled off Good Scout by a head. Three lengths further back, Kernel (slow to get going from an outside position) just beat Princess Myosotis and Lady Nottava for fourth. The winner, a three-year-old by Defoe, should go on to useful class as a sprinter. It was a striking performance which gave Benevolent h narrow win in the Fairfield Hack Handicap. Big Joe and Johnemby were slow to move, and Martimus was soon showing the way, with Winchelsea, Confidant and Roman Son next. Benevolent had been prominent for a little way, but before going two furlongs he started to drift, finishing up with Scarteen at the tail of the field. Martlmus collapsed when the straight was reached, leaving Confidant, and Roman Son showing the way to Big Joe and Johnemby. A furlong from the post Roman Son seemed lo have the race in safe keeping, but Benevolent swooped down on the outside, beating Roman Son in the last stride. A length further back Johnemby snatched third place from Valcron. Scarteen, and Confidant almost, in line. Benevolent had not won previously, though his track work for some time had been very good. Me is owned by Dr M. G. Louisson, who won with Don't Forget earlier in the day. The rider of Johnemby did not weigh in and Valcron was placed third. Sham Boy -jnd Stabilise began best in the Flying Handicap, Auctor joining them after a furlong. Stabilise drew clear of the other pair at the home turn and led them to the straight, where Airline appeared with a good run, after having drifted back early. Stabilise held on to stall off Airline's challenge by a length. Sham Boy was two lengths away, with Auctor next, then The Wrecker, who finished strongly. There was an inquiry into a charge that Airline interfered with Sham Boy and Auctor near the finish, but no action was taken. Auctor ran a good race, a's it was his first start for eight months, while he was slow away, so he will be much -harder to beat at Washdyke.
