MAKING TRENCH MORTARS.—Among the activities of the Minister of Supply and Munitions (Mr D. G. Sullivan) yesterday was an inspection of the manufacture of 3-inch trench mortars in a Dunedin factory. Excellent progress has been made with this undertaking, which involves a new process in which permanent moulds or “chills” are used, and the Minister has expressed himself as highly pleased with the way in which New Zealand artisans are adapting themselves to this exacting work. This picture shows molten steel being poured into “ chills ” in the first stages of manufacture.
