HOME GUARD
PHYSICAL INSTRUCTOR MR R. 0. JOHNSON APPOINTED */ EARLY START WITH TRAINING
The.- district commander of the Home Guard, Lieut.-colonel S. Bruce Smith, has received advice that Mr R. O; Johnson has been appointed to No. 11 area as area physical training instructor of the Home Guard. Physical training, will be carried out under the 1940 British Army syllabus of physical training, which lends nself to a graded system, adjustable to various ages of ’’guardsmen.” The .'first stage of the work will be tp train 1 instructors, and this will be
inaugurated by Mr Johnson immediately. When thoroughly trained these instructors will be posted to the Home Guard battalions and all ranks will participate in the training. Mr Johnson is a highly qualified instructor. He has obtained his knowledge and experience in various fields of physical training, including Y.M.C.A. work. For some time he held the position of general secretary and physical instructor for the Y.M.C.A. at Hamilton.
Mr Johnson is well known in Otago as an athlete. He represented New Zealand at the British Empire Games in Canada in 1930, and later he won the New Zealand senior men’s diving championship while representing Otago.
