SHIPPING LOSSES

ANOTHER SHARP DROP AIR ATTACKS ON ENEMY BASES LONDON, Jan. 14. (Received Jan. 15, at 1 a.m.) The British shipping losses for the first week of the New Year are the fifth lowest since the beginning of the war. The Ad- ,•• miralty announces that four British ships, of a total of less than 15,000 tons, were lost. No Allied or neutral vessels were lost. These are the lowest figures since May 6 of last year. Authoritative naval circles in London say that the reasons for the drop must remain a matter for conjecture, though one pos- - sibie cause may be the heavy attacks directed by the B.A.F. against naval and submarine bases in enemy ~ and enemyoccupied territory. It is assumed that these attacks are be- < ginning to have their effect on the number of German and ; Italian submarines operating in the Atlantic.
