THE EMPIRE'S LEADERS MESSAGES TO NEW ZEALAND HIGH HOPES OF VICTORY (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 26 Faith in the future and high hopes of ultimate victory are expressed in messages received by the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, from overseas leaders reciprocating Mr Fraser's messages of greetings. Appreciation of the part that New Zealanders are playing is mentioned in some of these messages. The former Secretary lor War, Mr Anthony Eden, who was recently appointed Secretary for Foreign Affairs, says: "The New Zealand forces of all three services have played a splendid part in the war effort and contributed materially towards the recent victory in the Middle East, which augurs well for the New Year." " My sincere good wishes for a happy New Year and for the success of the British Commonwealth in its grand effort in the defence of the principles on which it and civilisation could alone endure," states a cablegram from the Prime Minister of South Africa General J. C. Smuts. "May 1941 see the downfall of Hitlei and the dawn of a new era of peace.' states the Lord Privy Seal, Mr C. R Attlee, who. on behalf of the British Labour Party, sends all good wishes. Stating that the coming year was being looked forward to with confidence, the Secretary for the Dominions, Viscount Cranborne, adds: "We are heartened by the magnificent efforts of New Zealanderp by land, sea and A message of fraternal good wishes has been received from Mr Arthur Greenwood, a member of the British War Cabinet, who states: "I have followed with deep appreciation the splendid co-operation of New Zealanders in the common struggle for victory." Mr Fraser has also received messages of seasonal greeting from Mr W. Forgan Smith, Premier of Queensland, and Dr Ellison, Deputy Resident Commissioner of the Cook Islands. The following reply has been received by Mr Fraser from Mr Churchill to the former's Christmas message:— Many thanks for your message. I warmly welcome your assurance that New Zealand will do her utmost. This we had never doubted, and the heroic exploits of her sailors, soldiers, and airmen have more than justified our faith. We have indeed passed through dark days, but, heartened by the unshaken faith and generous aid of our friends and kinsmen overseas, the spirit of our people has never nagged. We can now look to the future with a keen eye. We have recently had a chance to show our mettle in the Middle East where so many of New Zealand's sons are eager to play their part. We shall seize every opportunity on all fronts to press on to victory with the same vigour. We face the coming year resolute and confident.
