HOLIDAY RACING

FIRST DAY AT WINGATUI STRAIGHTDELL SUCCESSFUL DORIA BEATS SPANISH LAD

The Dunedin Jockey Club's summer meeting was opened in fine weather and attracted a large attendance Conditions were somewhat threatening during the afternoon, but only a mild shower fell. The track provided excellent gomg, but could not be considered fast. The card provided good racing, marked by tne downfall of favourites. I Spanish Lad and Dona tought out the finish of the Federal Handicap, and theie was not much between them. . Straightdell put up a very creditable performance In the Otago Handicap as he set the pace all the way and fought on well at the finish. The Raker and Second Innings had every chance, and like Sovereign Lady faded at the finish after looking to hold a good chance when rounding the home turn. Otokia Hurdles Recollection was the popular fancy for the Otokia Hurdles and lookeddangerous when he joined Flagman in the lead at the second last hurdle. Flagman had set the pace and Recollection commenced to tire at the home turn. Flagman led to the last hurdle, with Donadea, Alrdric. Superex and Recollection handy, flagman made a slight mistake, but came Sn to win by three lengths from Ahdrie. who beat Superex by two lengths. Donadea and Recollection were close up. Prince Flaneur soon dropped back after being one of the early leaders Trial Handicap Rue was made a good favourite for the Trial Handicap, but got a bad run. She was a bit slow away and dropped back twice during the running. She came along at the finish, but the effort came too late. Gold Nugget, Confidant, My Song, Nisi Prius, Kohara and Eire's Run were prominent in the early stages. Eireis Ruin took charge from Gold Nugget at the home turn and came on to win from Confidant and Rue. with Nisi Prius. Foxette and Kurawhi next Dunedin Handicap Palfrey was sent out favourite for the Dunedin Handicap, but did not have his chance assisted by drawing eightat the barrier. Cruden Bay, on the rails led out from Desert Maid, Southern Wave,* Dash o' Dublin. Palfrey and Calypso Desert Maid and Southern Wave headed Cruden Bay, and in a good finish Southern Wave beat Desert Maid by a short halflength Palfrey drew up to finish three lengths awav, with Cruden Bay the same distance back, followed by Dash o Dublin and Calypso. The Federal Handicap, In the Federal Handicap Raeburn refused to leave the post. St. Cloud was slow away, and Spanish Lad, .Lord Nuffield and Boswell were smartest out. Master Hotspur ran to the front at the far turn, but Lord Nuffield came on again and led into the straight from Boswell, Spanish Lad. and Doria. Spanish Lad and Dorla came on from Lord Nuffield In the straight, and in a good finish Doria beat Spanish Lad by a neck. Boswell was a length away, followed by Spendthrift, Wild Career, Lord Nuffield and St. Cloud, who were bunched. Otago Handicap Swordstick was the only withdrawal from the Otago Handicap. The Raker was made favourite in a good betting race. Not Out began well, but was steadied, and Straightdell led Not Out along the back, and. at the far turn Second Innings ran up to Not Out, and Sovereign Lady was improving her position. Straightdell led round the turn from Second Innings, Sovereign Lady, The Raker, Not Out, and Doubleack. Once well in line for home Straightdell kept in charge and. stalling off Doubleack, beat him by a neck. Not Out got a lucky run on the rails and was a head away third. Mona's Song and Sovereign Lady were next. Milburn Handicap Anglo Irish, Twenty Grand and Alias were badly left at the rise of the barrier in the Milburn Handicap. Eulogist was always fairly handy to the leaders, and once in line for home came through to beat Royal Style, who finished two lengths in front of Craiglea. Alias made up ground to finish fourth, with Muffler, Lady Sincere and Lawford Lass next. Craiglea, Pink Dress, Lawford Lass and Southern Sail faded after being prominent to the home turn. Burnslde Handicap Schoolgirl was kept waiting in a handy position in the Burnside Handicap, and won without being asked to extend herself. Night Pal made up ground to finish second, getting up to beat Blissful Lady who had made most of the .running. Salisbury Handicap Pleading at once became prominent In the Salisbury Handicap and won all the wav Kippen. Airline, Lucky Featner and Prince Ruenalf were following the leader without threatening danger. The totalisator handled &MWJ° T J£? dav (win £11,102 10s, place *■15,484 10s), as compared with £18,761 10s for the corresponding day last year-an increase of £7825 10s. Foremost Junior, and Gold Pot. she was beaten at the distance, and Royal Grattan stayed on well to beat the fastfinishing Gold Pot by a length. Peasant. Guy was half a length away third, and Bronze Eagle close up in fourth place. Pleasant Guy was forced to make the pace in the teeth of a howling gale, and she was not disgraced. Gold Pot made his run too late and was unlucky. Foremost Jtmior and Blue Diamond tailed the field over the first mile and then made a fast run to be second and third respectively at the half-mile, but they soon compounded. Blue Diamond appeared to be a bit off colour. The winner was the outsider of the field and returned a windividend of over half a century. Aspirant pulled herself to the.- front early in the Final Handicap and held her lead to.the .finishu AtJth'eLhome turn she was four lengths clear of Ben Wyvis, with Marque and Sister: Polly next, in' the running, and Royal Grattan challenged strongly on the rails. Aspirant was stopping at the finish, but she had a couple of lengths to spare from Ben Wyvis, who was a similar distance in front of Royal Grattan. Marque was fourth, but Sister Polly dropped out in the run home.
