MR J. S. MACARTHUR 0 The death occurred at Wellington last week of Mr James Smith Macarthur, "who was until earlier this year managing director, and chairman of the Dental and .'Medical .Supplies Company, Ltd., Wellington. He was-iborn at Dunedin 67 years ago *ahd r '.was educated at the Otago Boys’ High .School. He entered the Colonial Bank. and was with that bank and. the Bank pf New Zealand for 12 years/ 'but Jeft banking in 1903 to join the New. Zealand Consolidated Ltd., which later became/the -iDejltal and Medical Supplies-'Company.,/.He Was secretary of the, company’' for nine years and then became general manager in 1912. , • In 1916 he became a member of the board as managing director, and- in '1922. he was. .elected chairman of directors asWell.He held both offices until'he retired last May. Mr Macarthuf was also on the boards of directors of the . Victoria Laundry, Turnbull and Jones, Ltd., and the Golden Bay Cement Company. mS"g. wPw. B. HUGHES / Advice has been received of,, the death in Melbourne of Mr , G. W. W. B. Hughes, formerly national secretary of the Y.M.C.A. in New Zealand. Mr Hughes, who was born in South Australia, commenced his work with the Y.M.C.A. as physical director at Adelaide. Later he came to New Zealand and tVas general secretary to the movement at Dunedin, holding this position for about eight years. During .the Great War he went to England as supervising secretary of the Y.M.C.A. activities with the New, Zealand troops there in France. He returned to the Dominion after the war and was appointed national secretary. In 1919 he returned to Australia to take up the appointment of general secretary, and control of the modern Y.M.C.A. building erected in Melbourne. He held this position until his death.

MR HUGH WILSOINf v

The death occurred last week of Hugh Wilson, of Dunback, at the age of 80 years. Born at Ballymena, County Antrim, North of Ireland, in 1860, he left the -Homeland by the Arawatta for Melbourne, and thence came on to Bluff by.; the William Elder in 1880. Settling lit the Oamaru district, he followed farming pursuits until 1918, when he bought a grocery business at Kakanui. Later he purchased the Fairfield store, and 14 years ago took over the Dunback general store. Alw'ays interested in education, he was. for many’ years a member of the Maheno School Committee, and was chairman for 10 years and secretary for , 4 years. Three of his daughters. entered the teaching profession. He was a member ,of the Maheno Lodge, 1.0.0. F., and was also a past -master of the Masonic Order, being affiliated to the Lodge Kilwinning. Oamaru. His death removes the last surviving foundation member of the Ngapara Lodge, In 1887 Mr Wilson married Jane McLeod, a daughter of Mr James McLeod, of “ Spnnghill,” Maheno, one of North Otago’s early settlers. He is survived by eight daughters and three sons—Mr N. E. Wilson, Lands and Deeds. Department, Dunedin; Miss J. M Wilson, Mrs E. Brownlie and Mr F. H, Wilson, all of Dunback: Mrs N D. Murray and Mr H. H. Wilson, of Christchurch: Mrs W. Fraser, of Kurow; Mrs A. L. Murray, of Tokarahi: Mrs J. A, Tyson, of Kakanui; Sister E. Wilson, on active service, Egypt; and Miss A. F. Wilson, Dental Clinic, Timaru. In addition, there are 26 grandchildren.

MR W. D. SUTHERLAND ! '

The death occurred at ;his residence: at Port Chalmers on Sunday of Mr William Ddber Sutherland, aged 60 years. Born in the Lower Harbour district, Mr Sutherland spent all . his life in work on the harbour, being in charge of the lights. Since going to reside at Port Chalmers in later years he had taken an active part in local affairs, including church work in the Presbvterian Church, and was also a member of the Masonic body. He was very interested in .the Old Identities Association, of which body’-he was ah executive officer. He was a member of the Borough Council for the past two years and a-half, and was a mem-, ber of the Otago Education Board. Mr Sutherland is survived by his widow and grown-up family of three sobs and one daughter. His grandmother was one of Florence Nightingale’s Crimea nurses.
