OBITUARY

s MR W. F. ABEL One of the most outstanding figures in educational circles in Otago. Mr W. F. Abel, died yesterday after a short illness at the age of 64 years. For 49 years he had served the Otago Education Board as a teacher, for the last 11 years as headmaster of the Musselburgh School. He was a brilliant organiser, a fine teacher, and a.popular man in his profession. He was due to retire at the end of next month. Mr Abel started his teaching career at the age of 15 bo: nt' a outril teacher at the

Arthur Street School for one year and at the Anderson's Bay School for three yeais. after which he attended the Dunedin Training College, His first major appointment was that of headmaster of the Lowburn School. Few some vears ne occupied a similar position at the Cromwell District High School, and then came to Dunedin as first assistant at Albany street. He was headmaster at the Oamaru North and High Street Schools before being appointed to Musselburgh. Keenlv interested in the executive side of the teaching profession. Mr Abel was for mtny years secretary of the Otago branch of the Teachers' Institute and for one term was president of the New Zealand Educational Institute At the time of his death he represented the South Island teachers on the Superannuation Board and Otago teachers on the Teachers' Court of Appeal. Mr Abel to )k an active part in the work of the Dunedin Competitions Society and was a member of the executive. He was a keen bowler, playing for the Kaituna Club, and was selector for the club at the time of his d*ath. He is survived by his wife, one son. Mr W. W Abel, a mining engineer in Malay, and one daughter. Mrs J. Mawhinney. nf Maniototo.
