OBITUARY

MR PHILIP CLENT A familiar figure in Balclutha and district for over half a century, Mr Philip Clent passed away, on Tuesday morning, at the age of 70 years Mr Clent had been in failing health for seme time. He was born at Blueskin, Waitati district, and went to work on the Chicory mill on the island opposite Balclutha when a boy of 14, Afterwards he became connected with, horses and worked for the late" Mr George, Thomson for a time.. Some 35 years, ago he went in for stock dealing. He was a welcome visitor ,in many Gatlins Bush settlers’ homes, where he could be depended upon to give a good price for the surplus cattle. Latterly he had contented himself, with dealing in a- small way. but for years, especially when he was the lessee of Tosh’s estate in the environs of Balclutha he was one of the biggest dealers in the district, and, such was his judgment, he invariably did well out of cattle bought for grazing. In his younger days he was very keenly interested in the turf, particularly .5 in; trotting' races, and. owned some good trottgrs in his day. Even rights up the last he retained his affection rot the trotting horse, and had several 1 voung .ones, coming on that would soon have been ready to handle. He was a vice-president of the local trotting club and his services were in demand when there was any handicapping to be done in connection with small local amateur meetings. He had also been a member of the Clutha and Matau A. and Pi Society for many V years, and was an active worker in the interests of the society. He had been president of the society for a term, and at the time of his death held the position of senior vice-president. Mr Clent .married a daughter of the late Mr Bobert. Wyber, of Balclutha, and she predeceased him three years ago. He is survived by a family of four—Messrs. Stewart and Douglas Clent (Balclutha) and Misses Martha and Chrissie Clent,' the latter of whom is at present at the Teachers’ Training College.
