SUCCESSFUL YEAR’S WORK The annual meeting ot 11 ic _ Young Women’s Christian Association of Dunedin was held last night, when Mrs J. R. Fan - bairn presided over a good attendance ot members. After the business meeting, an impressive dedication and candle-lighting ceremony was conducted, following which the annual birthday social was held. Stressing the need for the women ol New Zealand to accept events from day to dav with quietness and confidence. Mrs Fair bairn, in her welcome to those present, referred to the distressing events that had occurred since the last annual meeting Despite the war. she hoped the association would have a successful year. Moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet. Mrs Fairbairn said that it was apparent how badly the association was in need of new buildings when about 268* young women had had to be refused accommodation during the vear. She referred to the value of the hostel in providing a home for girls, and said that it was doing particularly good work for girls coming in from the country, The cafeteria also gave a valuable service to young women and schoolgirls, especially in the provision of midday meals The activities among the girls tpnebt them to b( good citizens and built up character and health The V.W.C.A.. which was a world-wide organisation, was performing valuable work in the countries affected bv the war, and the local branch, Mrs Fairbairn said was helping financially in this. , , . Mr J Sutherland Ross seconded the motion and appealed to members of the association to have faith in their cause and to avoid all defeatist talk. He congratulated the association on its successful year and wished it continued prosperity. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Mrs R. W. S. Dotting, Mrs P. L. Ritchie, and Miss G. Farnie were re-elected members of the Board of Directors. Messrs Barr, Burgess, and Stewart were re-ap-pointed honorary auditors, and Messrs Brugh. Calvert, and Barrowclough honorary solicitors
