BALCLUTHA Magistrate’s Court At the monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr H. J Dixon, S.M., judgment for the plaintiffs by default w'as given in the following civil cases:—John H. Stevenson, Ltd., v. M. J. Wybrow' (Chaslands), claim £8 Us Bd, with costs (£1 19s 6d); commissioner of taxes v. Alfred John Glen (Awamangu). claim £22 18s 4d, with costs £i 12s): A. McEvvan (Fortrose) v. S Scott, iun (Kaitangata). claim 11s, with costs (8s). A large number of traffic cases nd several charges of allowing stock to wander, as well as two maintenance cases were dealt with. The Kaitangata Coal Company proceeded against T.. E. Ashley, claiming £.B and possession of a tenement. —After hearing evidence, judgment was given for the amount claimed, with costs, and an order was made for possession on or before October 10 H. Frye, a taxi-drivei. was charged with driving a car in John street without due care and attention.—After hearing the evidence of Traffic Inspectors Ireton and Gray and the defendant ,the charge was dismissed. John Horsley Taylor, a farmer, of Paretai, a widower, aged 50, was charged with committing Incest with his daughter, aged 17.—Chief Detective Holmes (Dunedin) prosecuted, and Mr R R. Grigor appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty and w'as committed to the Supreme Court at Dunedin for sentence. Bail was allowed in the accused’s own recognisance of £3OO and two sureties of £IOO each. MILTON Milton Cricket Club The annual meeting of the Milton Cricket Club was held on Tuesday night, Mr E. Olver presiding over a small attendance. The annual report and balance sheet, which show'ed that the credit balance of 7s 6d had increased to £4 18s 2d, were adopted. It was decided to place on record the services rendered to the club by those members who had left with the services. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr E. Olver; vicepresidents—Messrs L. Burn, J. Gray. A. B. L. Burn, S. Ottrey, A. McLaren, R. M. Rutherford, T. H. Russell, A. McLeod and W. Jeffery (Dunedin): secretary and treasurer, Mr W. Heads (re-elected): club captain. Mr H. Heads (re-elected); deputy captain, Mr L. Wybrow; auditor, Mr G H. Thomson; delegates to tire South Otago Cricket Association, Messrs W. Heads and S. Ottrey; committee—Messrs L. Wybrow, J. Kane'. J. Vidal, W. Arbuckle and J. Kerr; selector, team captain: coach. Mr J. Vidal (re-elected). Opening day was fixed for Saturday, October 5, and it was decided to issue four complimentary memberships to the Toko District High School. TAHAKOPA Road Improvements Last week a small pipe culvert crossing the main road was replaced by six huge 3ft 6in pipes. These pipes should result in improved conditions in times of heavy rain. A deep ditch has been dug, running past the blacksmith’s shop, an embankment has been levelled, and the road straightened. An unfortunate result has followed this latter work Due to heavy rain, the ungravelled portion of the road has cut up badly, and on two occasions cars have been bogged, A quantity of gravel would improve conditions Lawn Tennis The Tahakopa Lawn Tennis Club’s committee postponed its official opening of the season on Saturday afternoon, due to the bad w'ealher conditions in the morning. The decision was unfortunate, as the weather cleared in the afternoon Oddfellows’ Ball One of the outstanding functions of the year in Tahakopa. the Oddfellows Ball on Friday night, again proved successful. Music was supplied by the Balclutha Caledonian Dance Band, and the duties of masters of ceremonies were carried out by Messrs George Smith and K Anglein An energetic lodge committee, with Mr C. Stoddart secretary, worked well to ensure success. Personal Mr J. Crossan. who has been teaching in the Kahuika School for tlle pa ®L th ,lm vparc , has left for Dunedin and latei w.n enter Burnham Camo as a member of the 4th Reinforcements. Miss M. J.
