NURSES’ MEMORIAL FUND

ANNUAL REPORT The rnnual report of the New Zealand Nurses’ Memorial Fund (Incorporated) states, infer alia: — /It is with .great regret that the committee has to report the death of Mr W. T. Monkman, .who acted as secretary to the provisional committee which initiated the memorial fund, rnd for 22 years acted as auditor'to the fund, in which he always* took the deepest interest. DuringHhe period of his association with it,' the capital fund has grown to nearly £34,000, and over £21,000 has been distributed to nurses in need of assistance either in the form of grants or annuities. The last year was commenced with the 1: rge number of 40 nurses in receipt of , help. Of these, 11 have gone off the list, and five new names have been added, leaving the total of 34, about * the same number as the year before last. The numbers in, need of help naturally fluctuate, but v(rith the passage of ye:rs the tendency will be 1 for the numbers to increase. Since the fund has been in operation relief has been afforded to 126 nurses, and the average amount of help' has come to about £ 170. The amount distributed last year was.£l3lo, whicn wrs more than the, annual income, but . the deficiency was covered by the contributions of the nurses in the Dornipion. Contributions from the public did not reach £l2O, of which £3l 10s came in the form of three life membershin subscriptions. Legacies received during' the year cams to £l9l, of which £36 came from the estate of a nurse who had been for some years an annuitant of the fund. The committee appreciates very much the continued interest ' taken by working nurses in its efforts to help their less fortunrte sisters. This year the contributions made through their associations and hospitals amount to £195 16s 7d. The cost of administration has gone up £4 during the year, chiefly as a result of the increased rates, of postage, but it is still very low.
