SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA Sudden Death A man named James Alexander Robertson, aged 67. who had been living alone in a hut In Crown street, near the riverbank, was found dead in his bed on Wednesday afternoon. The cause of death is believed to have been heart trouble, and. as he had consulted a doctor some little time ago, there was no necessity to hold an Inquest. The deceased is believed not to have any relatives in the Dominion. It is understood that this Is the third death of an old pensioner in this hut within the past few years. Personal Mrs F. J. Lucas, the wife of Flyingofficer Lucas, of the Royal Air Force, left last week for England to rejoin her husband. She was accompanied by her little daughter, and had been spending a holiday at Tuapeka Mouth with her husband's people (Mr and Mrs Charles Lucas). Obituary A well-known resident of Balclutha, Mr James Wright, died suddenly at his residence in Lanark street early on Thursday morning, in his seventy-second year. Mr Wright was born at Goodwood, in the Palmerston South district, and was the son of the late Mr Andrew Wright, a pioneer settler. Before coming to Balclutha about 16 years ago, Mr Wright followed farming pursuits and farmed successfully on his own account. Locally he took no part in public affairs, but was keenly interested in the Presbyterian Church, and he filled the position of church officer with credit to himself and all concerned. He was also a member of the Deacons’ Court. He was an enthusiast in gardening, and for a time acted as caretaker at the bowling green, looking after the green remarkably well. Mr Wright was of a genial nature and was well liked by all who knew him. He was twice married, and leaves a widow and two children by his first wife. They are Mr Andrew Wright, of Balclutha. and Mrs S. Chirnside, of Waiwera South. The funeral took place to the Balclutha Cemetery on Saturday and was Well attended. As a mark of respect, play was adjourned at the bowling green, and the players formed up on either side of Lanark street as the funeral cortege passed. Balclutha Band Balclutha Brass Band, recently resuscitated, now looks like attaining to the playing standard the band possessed some years ago. This must be largely attributed to the efficient conductorshlp of Mr J H. Wells, of Milton, who is taking a real interest in the band. On Good Friday night the band gave a taste of its quality by its rendition of the following programme in Clyde street: Marches — “Victoria,” "Colonel Bogey,” “Back to Tipperary Days,” “ Our Loyal Comrades ” (a march dedicated to all bandsmen on active service), also the popular "South of the Border," “ Beer Barrel Polka,” “ We’ll Hang the Washing on the Siegfried Line.” and “ Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Good-bye.” Bowling Balclutha Club held a Rinks tournament on Good Friday, which was won by a Stirling rink after some very exciting play. Results were as follows, skips names only being given:—

The final was won by the Stirling rink, comprising Jordan, Reid, Duncan and Walls, the runners-up being a Balclutha rink—Cookarill, Paice. J. Sinclair, and M Low. On Saturday fine weather again prevailed, ;and an interesting Pairs tourney was played, the winners being Mathewson and Stewart. Cricket A Mosgiel team defeated Balclutha on the latter’s ground on Saturday after a good game. Batting first, Balclutha made 125 (Gold 38, Frengley 18, Green 13, Hill 12, McGregor 11). Mosgiel replied with a score of 220 (Johnstone 79 retired, H. Murray 35. Pauli 22, F. Murray 21, Renton 13, McLeod 12, Paterson 11; Kirk 10). Paterson and Renton were the most successful bowlers for the winners, and Frengley and L. Guest for Balclutha. Bible Class Camp The Bible class camp of young men, held under the auspices of the OtagoSouthland Methodist Y.M.B.C, Unions in the buildings and grounds of the South Otago High School at Rosebank, Balclutha, has proved immensely successful. The boys, in the number of 130, and in ages ranging from 14 upwards, arrived in camp on Thursday evening, and since then have followed the programme laid down for them, The camp captain, the Rev. M. A. McDowell, is in charge, and he has as deputy the Rev. A. T. Kent. The camp is being conducted in military fashion, with reveille at 7 a.m. and lights out at 10.15 p.m. The main features, apart from camp meals and exercises, have been a Good Friday morning service by the Rev, R. E. Patchett, and a missionary rally. On Saturday a sports meeting was held on the school athletic ground, and the events were keenly contested. with some good runners showing up. At night there was a camp concert entitled “ Balclutha Revue of 1940.” This proved amusing and enjoyable. Yesterday morning was marked by a church parade to the Balclutha Methodist Church, where the preacher was the Rev. A. T. Kent. The afternoon was free, and in the evening a camp communion service was conducted by the Rev. M. A. McDowell. To-day there will be lawn tennis and Association football tournaments and a cricket match. Late this afternoon the camp will be closed.
