RECALL DEMANDED
AN AMERICAN OFFICIAL CRITICISED ISOLATIONISTS WASHINGTON, Mar. 20. Isolationists within and without Congress have renewed their demands for Mr Cromwell's recall. Significance is attached to Mr Hull's request to the Ottawa Legation to send a copy of the speech. Publicly Rebuked A later message states that the Secretary of State (Mr Cordell Hull) telegraphed to Mr Cromwell that his speech is likely to disturb relations between the United States and other Governments. He added that it contravened the standing instructions to diplomats and asked him to observe them in future. This is the first time ip memory that the State Department has publicly rebuked an envoy. Mr James H. R. Cromwell, United States Minister to Canada, addressing the Canadian Empire Club, criticised American isolationists, and issued a warning to Germany, which " frankly and openly seeks to destroy the institutions of the social and economic order on which the United States Government is founded. It is only too apparent that the lives, liberty, livelihood and the very safety of the citizens of all the neutral democracies may be dependent on the outcome of the present war."
