CANADIAN ELECTIONS
THE CAMPAIGN CLOSING MINISTERS ANXIOUS OTTAWA, Mar. 21. (Received Mar. 22, at 10 p.m.) The Prime Minister (Mr W. MacKenzie King), in his final election broadcast, emphasised that the elections were of importance as the first vote of a free democracy in wartime. He charged the Conservative leader (Dr R. J. Manion) v/ith slanderous personal attacks. There is some anxiety in ministerial circles, where it is admitted that the Conservatives are certain to gain. Dr Manion's ability to speak French is an asset. Moreover, he has contrived to focus attention on domestic issues, in which there are grievances against the. Government. In addition, many voters believe that as an imperfect MacKenzie King Ministry is likely to be returned, it would be best in the national interest to have a strong Opposition to call it to account.
