THE REV. C. S. MATTHEWS

WELCOME TO BRENTFORD WHERE A LEADER SHOULD BE (From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, Dec. 22. , A very successful social evening, with music, took place at Brentford. Its purpose was to welcome the Rev. Charles S. Matthews, formerly of New Zealand, to the ministry of the Park Baptist Church, Brentford. " To-night," said Mr N. H. Long (cosecretary of the church), "is the first stage in a new era of our church's history," Mr F. H. W. Wickendon (cosecretary with Mr Long) welcomed Mr Matthews on behalf of the church and promised him their loyal support. Mr Matthews, in reply, said, he was glad to come as their leader, and he hoped they would be near to him, to support him with his work. It was very often the case that the minister found some people in front. Since he had been back in England he had visited 45 churches, and he had found that there were always some people behind the pastor, and some very far behind, back-sliding. A few others were in front, and, he added, that was the danger zone. If they had a minister, he should be the leader, if he did not know how to be one, then he should not be in the position of minister. A minister, however, should know his job, should know something of human nature and understand human needs. " So I suggest," he added, " that your minister should go as fast as he will, as far as he will, and as full out as he will, provided he goes in the right direction. If he goes in the wrong direction, then you must pull him! up." Message for the People Mr Matthews said that they would now have plans to make. He had a policy which he proposed to give them to carry out. He suggested that they set themselves the task of a JO per cent, increase. There was nothing like an object, if they did not know where they were going they would never get there. There were associations connected with the church in which the different members were connected. Each branch must endeavour to reach that 10 per cent, increase first. Brentford had a message for the people of the country. A seli;-centred church was a doomed church, and a self-centred nation, whether England or. not, was a doomed country. The day of internationalism had come, and they were part of one great whole. THEY ALL COMB BACK TO "BAXTERS" Every year many cough remedies make their appearance for a short while, but Baxters Lung Preserver goes on from strength to strength, for generation after generation. " Baxters" alone has the inimitable ingredients which deal most effectively with coughs, sore throats and bronchial irritation. "Baxters" tonic action is also unique.—Advt. .- ' .
