HOSPITAL APPEAL
INSTALLATION OF EARPHONES A SUCCESSFUL CONCERT In aid of the campaign being conducted Ijv Station 4ZB to provide radio earphones for the Dunedin Hospital, an entertaining and successful concert was held last night in His Majesty’s Theatre. ■ rhe concert, which was under the direction of the Station Director of 4ZB (Mr M. S. Bullivant), and was organised by Uncle Percy, of 4ZB, was composed of wellselected and varied items, and met with the enthusiastic approval of a crowded house.
The object of the concert was commended by the Controller of Commercial Broadcasting (Mr C. G. Scrimgeour), who appeared on the stage along with the chairman of the Otago Hospital Board (Mr J. W. Dove). Any service which would assist to lighten the burden of illness was a worthy one, Mr Scrimgeour said, and he was sure the people of Dunedin would rally around the appeal and so enable the Hospital patients to be provided with Individual radios as soon as possible. He assured Mr Dove of his personal interest in the appeal, and thanked all those who had contributed to the fund.
The fact that Mr Scrimgeour had been responsible for the installation of radio earphones in the Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch hospitals was mentioned by Mr Dove, who said the sum of about £650 had already been raised for Dunedin, and it was hoped that before Christmas the whole of the £I2OO required would have been su?scribed. He thanked the 4ZB staff warmly for its work on behalf of the patients, and also expressed thanks to the' nurses who were at the theatre in uniform selling programmes. The programme included the following items:—Part songs—" Evenin- Song,”’ " Songs My Mother Taught Me,” ” Bobolink ’’—the Otago Girls’ High School. Choir (conducted by Mr C. Roy Spaceman; accompanist. Miss Jean Ireland); rhythmic dance, “ Syncopated Rhythm,”" Master Billy Shaw; tenor solos. "Little Town in Old County Down.” “ Oldfashioned Town,” Mr Dennis Sheard: conjuring act, “ Baffles ’’; selections. "At the Race," " Cuckoo Waltz," Miss Muriel. Caddie and her piano accordion band; solos. Miss Mary Pratt; " Spring Returns,’” based on waltzes by Strauss, Anita Winkel’s juveniles; selections, Dick Colvin and his band; dance, Constance Potts’s; “ Silver and Rose ” Ballet; humorous Items, "All Roon’ the Toon ” and " Highland JaZz,” Mr James Paterson; "The Miserere ” scene" from "II Trovatore.’” Miss Iw Harman and Mr Dennis Sheard; dance " Formation in Waltz Time,” students of the Wallace Studio; ventriloouial items. Mr H. McLean Eggers;,dance duo ‘ Black and White," Misses Norma and’ Nancy Stewart; choral items. ” Twinkling Stars " and “ Dream Seller," the Castallan Singers, led by Miss Mavis McDonald: xylophone novelty Mr Fred Gedson, accompanied by Dick Colvins band Accompanists were Mrs Ernest Drake. Miss Mavis McDonald, and Mr Mark Tozer.
