OTAGO ASSOCIATION PLUNKET SHIELD DATES CONFIRMED DRAW FOR FIRST ROUND The fact that the northern major cricket associations are unanimous in their opinion that Plunket Shield matches should be played as usual this season prompted last evening’s meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Association to waive any objections that might have been raised on the score of the expense of sending a team to Auckland. The question was discussed in committee, and it was decided to confirm the New Year dates for the match against Auckland. The president (Mr A. H. Allen) had remarked early in the meeting that the Canterbury and Auckland Associations wished to play fixtures as usual, and that, since this was centennial vear, it could be taken for granted that Wellington would not support any suggestion of postponement. It would not be degnified for Otago to raise objections, although it was unfortunate that it was Otago’s turn to travel to Auckland. Clearances Not Forwarded The fact that several players who had transferred to Dunedin cricket clubs from other centres or from one Dunedin club to another this season had not had thenclearances forwarded to the association was mentioned by Mr R. O. Talbot, on behalf of the Grade Committee. The penalty for playing men without clearances is well known to clubs, he said. The meeting decided to advise clubs again that clearances had to be lodged with the association immediately. Metropolitan Teams Mention was made by the chairman when Labour Day matches were being discussed, that once again the team that went to Invercargill to play Southland was referred to as an Otago team. “ These teams are not Otago teams, he said " They are Dunedin Metropolitan teams, and that is how they should be designated. If one of these teams should be beaten, particularly by a-weak subassociation. the reputation of Otago prirket would not be enhanced. 01 The secretary (Mr E. S. Wilson) remarked that the team tnat played Southland had always been designated on Otago te The personnel of these metropolitan teams was discussed briefly later in the meeting, when Mr J. Armitage mentioned that there was a desire in the Central Otago and Manlototo districts that some country players should be included in the teams that play Southland on Labour Day or North Otago at Christmas. The suggestion was approved and it was decked to ask the Selection Committee to bear it in mind. Material for Burnham A request from Mr W. P. Titchener that the association should try to f or a supply of used material to be sent to the 4th (N.Z.) Scottish Company in camp at Burnham was referred to the clubs with the suggestion that all available gear should be sent through the secretary (Mr E S Wilson). “There are a good few keen cricketers here.” Mr Titchener wrote. “ and I thought the clubs in Dunedin might be able to get together and arrange to forward a supply of used material.” Country Week The prospects of this year’s Connery Week tournament were discussed briefly when replies to the association s invitation to send teams were received The Vincent Sub-association advised that it would be sending a team, and the Southland Association reported that it had aecidcd to send a team if possible and was now circularising clubs to see what players were available. The reply from the Maniototo Sub-association was less encouraging. Shearing operations and seasonal work began about that time, and it would not be possible to send a team. It had been decided to try to arrange a match between the sub-association and a Dunedin metropolitan team soon after Christmas. It was suggested by Mr Talbot that a fourth team might be provided from the Dunedin intermediate or junior players. The aim of the tournament was essentially to develop country cricket, the chairman said. If it were not possible to have four ■ country teams, it would be a good idea to fill up with a Dunedin junior team. It was decided to make every attempt to have four country teams for the tournament. FIRST ROUND DRAW The first round draw for the various grades is as follows: First Grade November 4-11 Dunedin v.
