Count Cavour, Grand Rapids. Vice Admiral, Oratrlx, and Nightmarch all raced in Australia and came back to win the New Zealand Cup. Royal Chief is again working well after a trip to Australia, where he beat Mosaic, the winner of the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturdsiy. According to his trainer. Royal Chief took time to come right in Sydney, and was better at the end of his programme than at any previous stage of the trip. 1 iV; Attracting Attention H. Nurse is training a two-year-old filly by Gascony from the Psychology mare Symballo and thus a sister to the speedy Symcony, half-sister to The Crooner, and a close relative to Catalogue and Cylinder. She is built on solid lines, and has shown promise in the little sprinting she has done. The filly was purchased as a yearling at Trentham for 120gns by her present owner. Miss Edgar Jones, of Geraldine. Attracted Attention Lord Lynn and King’s Toast, owned by Mr J. R. McKenzie, had their first races on Saturday, and both shaped very encouragingly. Lord Lynn was prominent rounding the home turn of the Halswell Hack Handicap, but weakened when the straight was reached. King’s Toast ran a similar race in the Brackenfield Hack Handicap. He was slow early, but ran up to the leading bunch in the middle stages, only to fade out early in the run home This pair of three-year-olds have not been hurried, and both will be more in evidence before the season is far advainced A Third Time? No horse has ever succeeded in winning the Stewards’ Handicap three times, which Is the attempt that Paper Slipper will be making this year. Two horses have carried more Weight to win, Arrowsmlth 9.13. and Glentruln 9.6 in- her second year, while Cadland’s 9.5 is the same weight as i. oer Slipper has this , year. Arrowsmith and Cadland Iwere both slx-vear-olds when they wop, which Is Paper Slipper’s present aged When he won as a three-year-old he carried 8.5, and last year he carried 8.7 J. N.Z. Cup Trial V Although not impressive as a New Zealand Cup trial, there was a good deal of merit iln the performance of Hunting Cat in the Waverley Cup (says a Taranaki writer). He made all the pace over the last six furlongs, and the time 2min 8 4-ssec, has only been, bettered on two occasions, by Oratress in 1919 and Mendlp in 1929, both of whom carried less weight. Hunting Cat appears to have taken a new lease of life having won three out of his last four races It Is interesting to note the number of Waveriey Cup winners who have scored in big two-mille races since the war Included in the list are Oratress, Depredation, Muraahl, The Bahker and Fersen Star Rose was* second in the Waverley Cup just prior to going south to score his sensational victory in the New Zealand Cup in 1906.
