TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
There was an excellent attendance of members of the Townswomen’s Guild at the monthly meeting, held on Tuesday last. The president, Mrs R. S. Black, read a letter from the Medical and Public Health Committee asking for a list of the names of members willing to undertake canvassing work and to compile a register of citizens who are prepared to offer beds and bedclothes to equip an emergency hospital. Members able to give this assistance were asked to communicate with Mrs Black or with the honorary secretary. Miss A, M. Steel, of 448 Highgate. , Members attending a practical course in quantity cooking at Studholme House have now finished this work. A further class in cooking has been arranged and will be held in the evenings at the Home Science School. The Townswomen’s Guild is greatly indebted to Professor Strong for ar-. ranging these courses and providing expert instruction. , . The class in motor car servicing, conducted by Mr Herbert, has been well attended, and members are being taught how to grease and fuel cars, and also how to deal with repairs. A survey of the work of the Emergency Precautions Committee in Dunedin was given by Mr W. D. Pirrett. A tremendous amount, he said, was being done in preparation for war catastrophes, and plans were well forward for the safety and protection of citizens if threatened by danger. The scheme was not only for war time: it would remain operative and would deal with any national calamity should the emergency arise. Professor Strong proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Pirrett for an instructive address.
