TANNERY FIRE
DESTRUCTIVE BLAZE DAMAGE OF OVER £7OOO FURTHER OUTBREAK IN BRUSH FACTORY CPer United Press Association; CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 20. Damage estimated at between £7OOO and £IO,OOO was done by fire to-night in the sole-finishing department of Woolston Tanneries, Ltd. The fire had a strong hold on the interior of the building, a brick one, when the alarm was given about 6 o’clock. Four fire engines rushed to the scene and by the use of five leads had the outbreak under control in an hour.
It is thought that the fire originated in an automatic stoker in the centre of the building and the drying room in this part -was practically gutted. The warehouse end of the building was damaged only by water and smoke.
No sooner had the firemen brought the Woolston Tanneries fire under control than they received a call to the brush factory of Bunting and Co.. Ltd., in Fife street. The fire, here was in the boiler house, where a sawdust bin had caught fire. Although the blaze was difficult to get at it was suppressed without a great deal of damage being done.
