NORTH END AND UNIVERSITY : ' CLUBS OFFICIAL OPENING OF SEASON The North End and University Rowing Clubs officially opened the 1939-40 season on Saturday afternoon. The clubs combined to hold a social function in the North End, boathouse, where there was an attendance of about 75 members and visitors. The chair was occupied by Mr T. O’Shea, president of the Dunedin Regatta Club. The season was declared open by the presidents of the respective clubs, Dr Carmalt Jones (University) and Mr A. T. Watson (North' End); Good wishes were extended by representatives of other clubs, and the following toasts were honoured:—"The King’’: "University and North End Clubs” (proposed by Mr T. F. Mackie and replied to by Messrs R. B. Cook, University, and Mr F. W. Eggers, North End); "Dunedin Regatta Club” (Mr E. V. Fairbalm—Mr J. P. Vallis); “New Zealand Rowing Association ” (Mr G. Hogan—Mr W.- J. Wilson); “Otago Rowing Association ”. (Mr W, Glengarry— Mr F., Brough); “ Sister Clubs" (Mr J. T. Whelan—Messrs. A. S. Frame,. Oamaru, J.- K. Barclay, Otago, .D. Mathieson, Queen’s Drive; and H. Hill, Port Chalmers); "The Chairman” (Mr W. Robin.son). •
