GOLF PRIZE-GIVING DAY MIXED FOURSOME A very enjoyable afternoon's golf was experienced for the prize-giving day of the North Otago Golf Club on Saturday. The saen of B Company, North Otago, under the -command of Captain, H. McQuade and Lieutenant W. B- Spence, spent Saturday afternoon In -tactical operations, and went into bivouac at Bushy Beach’for the night. ' At dawn' on the following morning they launched an offensive on the cape against returned soldiers of the Military Reserve The defensive operations were skilfully carried out under the direction of Major W. H. S. Widdowson and Lieutenants C E. Taylor and Kibblewhite, and the territorials were presented a very difficult task. Just before daylight the attack opened on the defenders’ left flank, and here the territorials met with a stout resistance, one section, through failing to send out a patrol, being cleverly flanked and captured. With daylight, the attack developed on the other flank,: but the returned soldiers’ outposts Kent the defenders ’fully, informed- of the attackers’ movements, and two sections, converging together, met a heavy frontal and enfilading fire. CRICKET COMPETITION OPENED FIRST DAY’S PLAY The North Otago Cricket Association’s competitions opened on Saturday on fast wickets and under ideal weather conditions. The best scores of the day were made by Turvey (83 not out), Uttley (41), B. Dick (48 not out), and Campbell (51) Oamaru A gained a good lead over Albion, as did also the B team of that club over St. Kevin’s, and Union was ahead of School in the first innings. NGAPARA HALL DESTROYED BY FIRE SEVERE LOSS TO DISTRICT On Saturday night the Ngapara Hall was completely destroyed by fire, all that now remains of this large building being two chimney stacks It is understood that a meeting was held in the hall on Saturday night, but no particulars as to the origin of the outbreak nor as to insurances were available yesterday. The destruction of the public hall will mean a serious loss to the district. Suitable replies were made in each case by representatives of sister clubs, and several Oamaru bowlers journeyed to Waimate to attend the opening of the green there. A progressive Pairs tournament will be held at Phoenix on Labour Day. commencing at 1 p.m. WAIMATE Cricket Competition Old Boys had an easy win over Walmate In the Waimate Cricket Association’s competition on Saturday. The best score of the day was made by W. Murphy, who, playing for Old Boys, contributed 57 of his team’s total of 141 Waimate were all out for 63, none of the players making a stand. Bowling for Old Boys, S Fleming took eight wickets for 14 runs. Toilers, playing their first match of the season, had an easy victory over High School, making 119 for the loss of four wickets, High School making only 84. R Murchison was top scorer for Tollers, making 40 runs. J. Heasley scored 34, and R. Barlow had 22 runs on at stumps. D. Horsnell was top scorer for High School with 28 runs Bowling Season Opened The Waimate Bowling Club's season was opened on Saturday by the Mayor and first patron of the club, Mr G. Dash. The president, Mr J. C. Winning, extended a welcome to all, and congratulated the Green Committee on the condition of the green. A presentation of a bowling bag was made to Mr J. L. Menzles, who recently left the district. Mr I. Schrader, making the presentation, said they were pleased to have Mr Menzles with them on that occasion. The president of the South Canterbury Centre (Mr E. J. Ellis) said he was pleased the Waimate Club had entered the Centre competitions this year and he thanked the members for the support they had always given the centre Mr Dash then declared the season opn. Lawn Tennis At the annual meeting of the Waihao Lawn Tennis Sub-association it was reported that 14 teams had entered for the B Grade competition and 10 for the C Grade—an increase of two teams In each grade. It was agreed to play the competition on the zone system, B Grade games to be played every Saturday and C Grade every second Saturday Opening day was fixed for October 28 The zones are:— B Grade.—South; Glenavy Ikawal (2), Waihao Downs, Morven, Waimate (1), and Willowbridge.
