ST. KILDA TRAMS

POSSIBLE RESTRICTION OF SERVICE SEQUEL TO COUNCIL'S DECISION A suggestion that the decision of the St. Kilda Borough Council not to agree to the City Council's proposal to run a trial bus service on the Forbury Park and Tahuna lines would result in a reduction of the present service in the district was made yesterday by the chairman of the Transport Committee (Cr H. L. Gibson). "In view of the council's decision," he said, "I have instructed the transport manager to review the whole tramway service in the district with the object of effecting any economies possible. This will undoubtedly result in a reduction of the service similar to that on the St. Clair and Anderson's Bay lines." ■ He had been very disappointed with the decision of the St. Kilda Council, Cr Gibson said. The service to Anderson's Bay and St. Clair had been curtailed with a view to economy, and It had been hoped to recover the loss at St. Kilda by the institution of buses. On the Forbury line there had been no need to consult the council as there was no Order-in-Council affecting the line/but it had been referred to it as a matter of courtesy. . Reference had apparently been made at the meeting of the council to the St. Kilda ratepayers but no mention of that was necessary, as they were not interested in the trams so far as profit and loss was concerned. That was entirely a matter for the city ratepayers. The St. Kilda people were getting a good service at the present time, but it had been hoped to improve it by an even better one Eggs are oecommg plentiful and cheaner.
