ALLEGED ASSAULT
"A DISGRACEFUL AFFAIR" INCIDENT IN TAXI "This : charge arises but of a disgraceful affair in Ryehill terrace on Saturday afternoon," said Senior Sergeant Claasen, when Patrick Rogers, employed as a miner iat Kaitangata,, appeared in the City Pdlice Court yesterday morning before Mr H.W, Bundle, S.M., on a charge of assaulting Noel Arthur Joseph Fairclpugh, a taxi driver. Rogers was represented by, Mr C. J. L. White. . "■ ,;:>.; Senior Sergeant Claasen asked for a remand as the police had not yet completed their inquiries. A remand to August 21 was granted. Mr White asked for bail, suggesting that, as there would be difficulties in procuring local sureties, the accused might be released on his own recognisance. Senior Sergeant Claasen said the assault was a serious one and had serious consequences, although the injuries to the taxi driver were only minor. As the result of the assault, the car had got put of control and, after running down the road, it crashed through a fence with concrete posts and, ploughed into a 50ft gully. A passenger in the car, who had been injured, had been admitted to hospital. Bail was allowed on the own recognisance of £SO, on condition that he reported twice daily to the police.
