CYCLISTS INJURED

COLLISION DURING ROAD RACE THREE ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL (Per United Press Association),.AUCKLAND, Aug. IS. A collision involving a motor cyclisi and a group of four racing,cyclists.: competing in the - North Shore Ama« teur Cycling Club's 52. mile rdad ; race' occurred just south of Orewa bridge on Saturday afternoon. The five riders concerned were injured, and two,were, brought to Auckland in an ambulance;' while the others came by car; Three of the racing cyclists were admitted! to Auckland Hospital. The victims were:— . Andrew Elia, aged 23, of Birkenhead, head and facial injuries; condition serious at first, but improved;. Frank Tredrea, aged 19, Point Cheva« Her, fractured thumb; condition not serious. '■'■•■• Cyril Douglas Lapwood, aged -22, Onehunga, shock and scaip abrasions;, condition not serious. Charles Henry PickneU, aged 19, of Onehunga, body bruises. <' Harry Rogers, motor cyclist, of; Eden terrace, fractured finger. The last two were not admitted to; hospital. The race was from Devonport to Orewa and back, and the riders were descending a hill in single file about 300 yards before the approach to the bridge, when the accident occurred. The two leaders escaped injury, and Lapwood was the first to collide with the motor cyclist, who was riding toward the city. Tredrea, Elia, and Picknell were then brought down in that order. V ' -. The injured men were - treated by members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, who were following the race in a. motor car, assisted by the district nurse from Silverdale. The three men least seriously hurt left by cars for Auckland, and the others remained to receive treatment until the ambulance arrived from the city.
