SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA RUGBY FOOTBALL The final for the Second Grade Rn"hv banner was played between, Clutha and Clinton on the Balclutha Show Ground on Saturday before a fair attendance. Fine but cold weather prevailed, and the ground was in good: order. The teams were very evenly matched, with the Blacks (Clinton) showing greater initiative. From a scramble on the Red line Miller scored for Clinton, but the kick at goal failed. Before the sr'ill closed Clinton added three more points (a penalty goal by Wilson) and Hanley cleverly potted a goal for the Reds, who had rather the worst of the spell, which closed with the score 6—4 in favour of the Blacks. In the second soell the plav was much faster, and at times went from one end of the' field to the other with great rapidity. Three times in succession the Reds took the ball to the line at the eastern end of the field, and each time the Blacks cleared splendidly. In one Red attacking rush Hanley, kicked high and was following up but J. Wilson cut in and took olav right to the Reds' line. T. Hansen led another rush to the Black line, and Keach got possession and kicked a very neat field goal. This gave the Reds a two-point lead, and so it remained until the whistle blew for time. Although the score (B—6) gave the 1939 banner to Clutha, it was generally conceded that on the dav's plav the losers had given the better exposition of football, but thi field goals had more than equalised that. Mr T. Fox was +v e referee. Knock-out Cup Competition ' In the Senior Grade knock-out competition between Clinton and Star that followed the junior grade banner final, a very poor display of football was given. Star arrived three men short, and three Clutha Second Grade players (Hanley. Shirley and Melvm; filled the gaps. In the first spell the play was characterised by a number of forward rushes, in which Willocks and Barnett. showed up for Star, and • the Orr brothers for Clinton. The spell ended without a score by either side. In, the second spell Clinton scored nine points, made up of two penattv goals kicked by "Johnny" Hoy. fujl-back. and a try scored by McLachlan, to Star's nil. Mr D. Inglis was the referee.

Another Snowfall After a decided fall in the temperature ori Saturday afternoon, snow fell on Saturday night, but fortunately the fall was not a heavy one. In the early morning it lay to a depth of an inch on the flat, but by afternoon had melted away except in shaded spots and oh the hills, which still bore a light covering. It is believed there will be a considerable loss of stock on the higher country, like upper Hillend. where the fall was much heavier, v Old-established Store Sold

" MILTON FIREMEN FORGATHER About 25 firemen, ex-firemen, Fire Board members, and representatives of various brigades met.in the spcial hall of the Milton Fire Station on Saturday night, when opportunity was taken suitably to recognise the services of the two principal officers of the Milton Volunteer Fire Brigade, who have resigned. Superintendent W. H. Wells has been a member of the brigade for a period of over 30 years, and has recently purchased a grocery business at Timaru, and will leave for his new sphere on Thursday. Deputy-superin-tendent J. R. Wilson has 27 years of fire-fighting service to his credit. Prior to the function, the new deputysuperintendent (Mr E. J. Gibb) and Senior Foreman R. Deputy-superintendent Gibb presided at the function at the station, and there, were also present representatives of Gore, Balclutha, Lawrence, and Mosgiel Brigades. After honouring the Loyal Toast, Foreman Burleigh proposed the toast of " The. U.KB.A.. and in reply Foreman L. Wallis (Gore), as representative of the Accident Assurance Society, stated that the society was run by the U.F.B.A. for the purpose of improving the lot of firemen injured in battle, but unfortunately several brigades in the southern district had not joined up with the. society. The present year was an unfortunate one.for the society, as a large sum was being paid out to rnenibers. principally a s the- result of the number of fires, in the North Island. Deputy-Superintendent J. R- Wilson, an ex-president of, the U.F.8.A.. also replied. He said that the conference and demonstration next year would be conducted by the Petone Brigade, and that the Government nad agreed to make the usual grant towards the prize fund, and also to issue gravellingpasses. The executive of the U.F.B-A. was a live body, and looked after the interests of the smaller brigades as ' well as the city brigades. The late Inspector Hugo had always maintained that it was not inefficiency on the part of the brigades that was responsible for the large number of fires in New • Zealand, but the reason was that the 'general public had not been educated 'to realise the risk, and » was through Vis efforts that fire prevention week ■fwd been instituted, with the resultant "living of hundreds offounds \\ The toast of "M Ron Fire Board Wps proposed bv Fireman L.D.Mit- & and renlied to bv Mr L.
