THE RABBIT PEST
TO THE EDITOR
Sir, —Your informants in yesterday's paper took the opportunity of making statements coloured by self-interest. There can be no more unreliable source for genuine proposals to rid the land of this ruinous pest than that of the professional rabbiter or the trader in rabbit skins. My wide and intimate knowledge of Central Otago conditions and runholders enables me to refute absolutely their statement that a charge is being made for blocks. The opposite is the case. During the last 12 months big sums have been paid to rabbiters by runholders who can ill afford it. Your rabbiter and exporter informants are obviously trying to hold on to a good thing. Their mental outlook is too cramped for this problem. They want to serve themselves and there is no room for such opinions amongst those who would serve the land.—l am, etc.. Heritage.
