DAVIS CUP TENNIS
PACIFIC ZONE FINAL AUSTRALIA v. CUBA FORMER WIN THE SINGLES (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SEABRIGHT, Aug. 10. In the Davis Cup zone final between Australia and Cuba the singles resulted as follows: — Bromwich (Australia) defeated Aguero (Cuba) B—6, 6 —o, 6—2. Quist (Australia) defeated Morales 6—o, 6—2, 6—2. Aguero was at set point in the first set. Although Bromwich had achieved a 4—3 lead, the Cuban drew the Australian to the net and passed him frequently, but Bromwich, who opened lazily, soon had things well in hand, particularly after he staved off his opponent at the latter’s set point. \He then quickly ran out the set, and concluded the match with even less ado. Bromwich said to the Australian Associated Press correspondent: “ I have no confidence in my strokes, because I have not had any real competition since leaving Australia.” Although Quist physically was under par, he had little trouble in eliminating Cuba’s No. 1 player. Quist elected to run as little as possible, and Morales obliged him by trying a baseline game, at which he was nardly capable of holding his own. Quist tired towards the end, but it was a walkover match for him, lasting 29 minutes. Quist’s baseline game was very accurate, but it is evident he will need some good practice in the next few weeks.
It is reported that the Japanese tennis authorities are anxious to have one or two members of the Australian team play in Japan' on the way home.
