UNEMPLOYED WORKERS’ MOVEMENT

MEETING OF LOCAL EXECUTIVE

The executive of the Dunedin branch of the National Unemployed Workers’ Movement held its monthly meeting on Thursday evening, Mr M Silverstone, president, occupying the chair. Sympathetic reference to the illness of the Prime Minister (Mr Savage) was made and the secretary was instructed ••to write expressing best wishes from the unemployed and 'the executive for his speedy recovery. Correspondence was received from the Minister of Public Works, the Prime Minister, Mr P Neilson, M.P. the committee of the China Relief the Minister of Housing, and from local organisations. The monthly financial statement and also the organising report were adopted The secretary reported that he had been in touch with the Placement Office, the Labour Department, Labour Bureau and also Mr M. Connelly, in regard to complaints received since last meeting. A report was received from the president. who interviewed the officials of ■the movement in Wellington, and those of the Christchurch National Unemployed Workers’ Movement It was agreed to assist the Blanket for China Relief Committee through the generosity of the president. The matter of the men being refused work during the recent snowstorm to clean up the streets was discussed at length,- and it was agreed to place on record the action of those concerned in not accepting the Government’s subsidy offered at that time Various accounts were passed for payment, and the letters received from the Minister of Public Works and the Minister of Housing were sent on to the men concerned for their consideration.
