The monthly meeting of the Waiareka Institute was presided over by Mrs Chalmers. The roll call was, “A_ humorous joke,” and the motto, “ Both' to advise and be advised is a feature of true friendship.” The competitions resulted: —8100m —Mrs Williams 1, Mrs Lauder 2, Mrs Macintosh 3; jar of preserved plums—Mrs Williams 1, Mrs Stringer 2, Mrs Williamson 3, An interesting demonstration on quilting was given by Mrs Webster, after which a short drama play was held.

This month’s meeting of the Balclutha Institute took the form of a Scottish afternoon. Mrs Newson presided, and the motto was, “To see oorsel’s as ithers see us, it wad frae mony a blunder free us,” and the roll call, “ Scottish sayings.” Solos were rendered by Miss Margaret Murray, dances were contributed by Miss Jean Dow, and Mrs J. G. Anderson played a pianoforte solo. Mesdames Anderson and Brown and Mr I. Dow (bagpipes) played accompaniments. The points competition for shortbread resulted;—Mesdames Hames and Berryman 1 (equal), Mrs Newson 3, Mesdames Smith and Mason 4 (equal). Mrs P. Mason won the competition, “Scotch song titles.” The stage had been tastefully decorated with tartah plaids and bowls of flowers, and made a pretty setting for a most enjoyable function.

The Miller's Flat branch held its monthly meeting on Wednesday last, when Miss McMillan, of the A.C.E., was among the visitors. Mrs F. McDonald was the winner ot a lucky spot” cup at afternoon tea and Mesdames McGonigal, Davidson and Borland won a written competition on “ Place-names in Otago and Southland. The Tomahawk Institute held its August meeting on Thursday evening, When the roll call, “ Mistakes you have made in your home,” caused much amusement. The motto was, “ The men and women lifting the world upward and onward are those who encourage more than they criticise.” The “ golden thread ” talk was given by Mrs Smith, who spoke on the second verse of the Creed. The competitions resulted:— Best collection of jam and jellies—Mrs Mathieson 1. Mrs Williams 2, Mrs Mathais 3; prettiest shopping bag—Mrs Smith 1, Mrs Mathieson and Mrs Williams 2 (equal); knitting bag—Mrs Taber 1. A humorous short sketch was presented by Mesdames Smith, Saunders, Taber, McDonald, and Smaill. The hostesses were Mesdames Smith, Smaill, Neill, Saunders, and Simon.

The monthly meeting of the Warepa Institute was held on Tuesday last. The president, Mrs T- P. Stewart, read the motto—“ Cheery people help weary people to forget their woes.” To commemorate the centenary it was decided that the institute plant trees along the roadside. The president, on behalf of the institute, presented Mrs Bringans, who is leaving . the district, with a posy, and wished her all happiness in her retirement. The “golden thread” talk was given by Mrs J. F. Ayson on “Influence.” The roll call was, “ Hints for renovating in the home,” and the competitions resulted:— Fancy sweets container—Miss Petrie 1; suede or leather work—Miss Eileen Ayson 1 and 2. Humorous readings were given by Misses Heckler and E. F. Ayson. The hostesses were Mrs J. F. Ayson and Misses E. F. Ayson and Heckler.

Mrs Varcoe presided at the monthly meeting of the Lawrence Institute, held on Monday last. The motto was “Never put up your umbrella till it rains” and the roll call “What New Zealand is famous for.” Members passed a jolly time with competitions and amusing anecdotes. Mrs A. Weatherall read a letter from the Link in England. The “Golden Thread” was commenced with a talk on “A woman in Parliament,” given by Miss Bulfin. The competitions resulted: —Best bloom —Mrs Moyle 1; marmalade—Mrs Moyle 1; cosy—Miss Hopkins 1. The hostesses were Mrs Moyle and Misses culfin and Hopkins,

Mrs O’Fee presided at the Waitati Institute’s monthly meeting, held on Tuesday last. The motto was. “Do a kindness and forget it; get a kindness done for you and never forget it.” and the roll call., “ Washing day dinner.” A competition. “False teeth

made with plasticine and peanuts, was won by Mrs Wylie (who will wear the silver button for one month) with Mrs Tooley second. A social evening was arranged for August 31. The hostesses were Mesdames Winlock. Don and Robertson, sen. * ¥

The Clinton Institute meeting was held on Wednesday last. Mrs Pannett presiding in the absence of Mrs Copland. The motto was “Be a lamp if you can’t be a star.” and the roll call, “Health hints.” Mr Casey gave an interesting lecture and demonstration on first aid, answering several questions. The hostesses—Mesdames Abernethy and West—organised a knitting competition, which was won by Mrs Milne, with Mrs Forrest second.
