LIBRARY CHARGES
TO THE EDITOR Sir.—The letter by “ Priptest ”in this morning’s Daily Times is somewhat misleading and is not quite in order. It is not true that the Athenseum makes a charge for all notable books I have been a subscriber to the institution for many years, and have never had any extra charges beyond my annual subscription, which I willingi’ pay for the facilities offered. I know that many subscribers pay 3d for reservation or for extra books, but they are only too glad to do this, whether it be a “ notable ” book or a novel Candidly. I consider the Athenaeum a little too lenient. There are no fines imposed, and I am informed of many cases where books have been out over their due period, whilst other subscribers are on the waiting list. I would ask “ Protest ’’ to figure out the landed cost of books to-day as against a few years ago—not only this, but other increased overhead charges—l am, etc., A Subscriber. August 11.
