THE PETROL TAX

COUNTY COUNCIL’S COSTS A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Aug. 11. Based on last year’s expenditure the increase of 4d a gallon in the price of petrol will raise the Southland County Council’s costs for its roading plant by £ll2l 15s. This information was given to the meeting of the council to-day by the county clerk (Mr H. C. Gimblett). Mr Gimblett said that these figures had been taken out on the consumption of last year, but recently the council had purchased three new graders and another was on order so that costs would be higher this year. The consumption of the roading plant last year was 64,454 gallons, There were also the engineer’s motor cars to be taken into consideration. He estimated that the contractor’s extra petrol costs would be £ 1000 a year and these would be added to the prices. It was decided without discussion to submit information to the Farmers’ Union and the Southland members of Parliament emphasising the increased costs to farmers.
