OBITUARY

MR J. E. GALBRAITH The death of- Mr John Edward Galbraith occurred yesterday morning. He was in his seventy-ninth year, having come to New Zealand in 1864. when only four years of age. on the ship Dement Water, of which his father was chief officer. Mr Galbraith. sen., became chief pilot at Lyttelton. and his son. was educated at the Lyttelton Borough School, joining the Railways Department as a telegraphist at Lyttelton in 1874, Three years later he was appointed! stationmaster at Glenavy. but in 1880 he resigned in order to join the permanent forces at Parahaka during the Te Whiti Native outbreak. After this he returned to Lyttelton. where the joined the Shaw Savill and Albion Company. Fifteen years later he was transferred to Port Chalmers, where he was superintending stevedore, a post he held until his retirement in 1933. Mr Galbraith took a keen interest in rowing and Rugby football, being captain of the Lyttelton Rowing Club, and occupying various positions in the Queen's Drive Boating Club at Port Chalmers, including that of president and delegate to the Otago Rowing Association. He was also a successful starter in manv rowing events at local regattas. Mr Galbraith. who. in addition to these other activities, was a member of the Dunedin Orphans' Club, is survived by his widow, one daughter (Mrs A. Goodwin of Dunedin). and two sons (Mr L. Galbraith. of Dunedin. and Mr D Galbraith. of Sydney). The funeral Will take place to-morrow afternoon at the Anderson's Bay Cemetery. MR D. YOUNG Mr David Young, whose death «•• curred in Dunedin on Saturday, was a well-known resident of Arthurton before he came to spend his retirement "} the .Pi y - Mr Young's parents settled at Arth&rton in 1876. and he became owner of the farm on the death of his father. Mr Young early adopted the practice of liming, and became one of the most successful farmers in the district. Mr Young was one of the first puptfs at the Waipahi School, who*e sixtieth anniversary celebrations he recently attended. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the service at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. F. Robertson, of Pukerau. Mr Youna is survived by his widow and bv his son. Mr David Young, of Arthurton.
