A WORKER’S LAMENT

TO THE EDITOR

Sir, —Permit me to ask the neople of New Zealand (“The Labour Party.” in other words) if their mathematics were learned in the Government schools' It seems like it to me. for how can they make out a Budget surplus of £BOO.OOO when there is a deficit by way of over draft of £24.000.000 at the Reserve Bank? Think of itl Why people will digest the stuff that is manufactured for them in'the Trades Hall is a poser to me. The real capitalists of this country are those who are seeking h every means to extract every surplus pound from everybody be that person rich man poor man. loafer or worker The answer for the reasons above may be indicated bv one of Sir Harry Lauder’s iokes. When asked by his teacher what his head was for he replied “ Please, sir to keep my collar on!” Does this applv to New Zealanders? I wonder, When we require an engineer, mechanic or any person ip Whom ability and experience are necessary we see to it that we get a known quantity But when we send politicians to Wellington we seem to send mostly those who are acclaimed by New Zealanders whose heads are to keep their collars on I have been labouring all my life under the capitalistic principle that ambition can be satisfied by grit and care Under Socialism as we have it this is impossible, We are taxed on money which we never receive—all of us. children, workers, nurses, and all institutions are being hounded out of existence. One of Nature’s laws—of self-destruction—is operating. The gentlemen at Wellington care little for humanity Their own money has never helped anyone but they have helped themselves by making class trouble “ farming ”, the workers and now they are farming all the people of New Zealand. Perhaps New Zealanders will wake when the shoe pinches, And of course they will sav *hev krtew it all the time.—l am. etc..

Compulsory Labour,
