Druidism There was a good attendance at the fortnightly meeting of the Alexandra Druids’ Lodge on Tuesday, A.D. Bro. A. T. Johns presiding. The bards reported that on account of the influenza epidemic a fair amount of sickness was prevalent. One candidate was initiated into the order. Calder; auditors, Bros J B Arnott and T E Sunderland Obituary By the death of Mrs Marion Alice Spain, wife of Mr S. T. Spain, of Earnscleugh Station, the district has lost one of its outstanding personalities. The deceased was born in Victoria 79 years ago and came to New Zealand with her mother at an early age. They resided at St. Bathans, her mother. Mrs Colgan, carrying out the duties of school teacher in this settlement. The deceased was a talented musician and, because of this, she was particularly sought after at social functions. She married 50 years ago in Dunedin and resided with Mr Spain at Earnscleugh Station for the greatest portion of this period. Mrs Spain was of a particularly bright and happy nature and was known fpr her charitable disposition, and during the Great War she was a tireless worker and an energetic organiser on behalf of the Red Cross movement. She was also a keen worker for the St. John’s Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband, three sons, and three daughters, who have the sympathy of a large circle of friends throughout the district. The funeral took place at Alexandra on Wednesday, the services at the church and graveside being conducted by the Rev. Father O’Connell.

Another old and notable personality of the district. Mr John Magnus, passed away at Christchurch on Sunday. The deceased was born in Sweden, and emigrated to New Zealand to join his brother, Mr G. Magnus, in mining operations on the Molyneux River. Mr Magnus was of a genial disposition. For some years past he had resided with his daughter in Christchurch. His remains were brought to Alexandra for burial, which took place on Tuesday, the service being conducted by the Rev. J. N. Templer. Golf Miss Noel O'Kane won the second round of the Scott Cup Competition with a score oi 82—8—74. She was followed by Miss Mcßae 99 —22—77 and Miss R. Cameron 104—26—78. In the Men’s Knockout Competition the following were the results:—Floyd 1, Sorrell 0; Royds 1, NicolsonO; Hewitt 1, Waldron 0; Ross 1, Rooney 0; Duncan 1, Milne 0: Belcher 1, the Rev. O’Connell 0; Gower 1, Wilson 0; Stewart 1, Provo 0; McLennan 1. Comerford 0. Personal Mr A. Thorley is at present on a visit to the North Island. Mr W. Bringans.
