HYPOCRISY
It has been said that hypocrisy is the homage vice pays to virtue, and I have often wondered whether, this being so, hypocrisy may not have something to be said for it in civilised society. After al/. the hypocrite is a man who accepts the highest standards of the world in which he lives. Hf respects Truth even when he calls it Terrewlh. By word, if not by deed, he supports the cause of Justice. Mercy. Honesty, and all the other virtues. He is virtuous himself only so far as it pays to be virtuous; but, as it often pays to be virtuous, his verv hvpocrisy may lead at times to his behaving like a good citizen.—Robert Lynd. London.
