THE FEATHER-WEIGHT TITLE GREANEY DEFEATS FINNIGAN (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June 8. A bout for the vacant feather-weight boxing title at' Ashburton to-night between Lex Greaney, Dunedin (Bst 101 b), and Fred Finnigan, Wellington (Bst 12Jlb), was won by Greaney on a technical knock-out in the middle of the fifth round. Greaney proved to be a stylish fighter, and Finnigan, who appeared to lack condition, took a count of eight before the referee stopped the fight. Four challenges to meet the winner were received by the Ashburton Boxing Association. WELTER-WEIGHT CONTEST DOWN DEFEATS JOHNSON (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 8. Making an auspicious “ come-back ” after a period of ten months, Barney Down, Wellington, beat Don Johnson, Auckland, by a technical knock-out in the ninth round of a professional wel-ter-weight boxing contest scheduled for 12 rounds in the Town Hall to-night. It was a bright display of scientific boxing in which’ both men moved fast, showing nimble footwork and clever defence. They were well matched as to height, weight, and reach, and the contest was fought at a brisk pace from the opening gong. S. JENKIN V. G. ALLEN Stan. Jenkin, the New Zealand champion, will have an opportunity on Monday of reversing ■ the decision over Johnny Summers’s protege, George Allen, of Auckland. On the occasion of their first match Allen knocked out Jenkin in ,the second round, but there was a great deal of argument over the bout Jenkin is now confident of reversing the decision. Since defeating Jenkin, Allen has secured decisions over McMahon and Mclvor . and leading middleweights, and on Tuesday evening succeeded in defeating, Cliff Hanham in Auckland. The amateur team from Auckland will consist of Enwright, Anderson, Stewart and A. Brown. They will be boxing a strong Otago team in Dymond, Rutherford. Miller and Delargey.
