MINE DISASTER
AN OUTBREAK OF FIRE FIVE DEATHS REPORTED GALLANT RESCUE EFFORTS (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, June 6. Fire in a seam 800 yards below the surface in the Astley Green colliery in Lancashire caused the loss of five lives, including the manager. It .is believed that three of the victims were cut off and the others died in attempting to save them. Rescuers risked gas in retrieving several of those injured. One thousand workers in the mine were sent to the surface. The area affected was eventually sealed to avoid further loss of life.
