OBITUARY
MR WALTER IBBOTSON The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr Walter Ibbotson in his eighty-sixth year. As one who wap keenly interested in various activities in the community for many years, Mr Ibbotson won the respect of all who knew him. Born at Wakefield, Yorkshire, he came to Otago as a young man and had resided in Dunedin ever since, being on the Town Hall staff until his retirement many years ago. In his younger days he was keenly interested in amateur theatricals, and was also a great lover
of music, being one of the original double quartet, the members of which were foundation members of the Royal Dunedin Male Choir, then the Liedertafel. He was choirmaster in several Anglican churches and also in the Trinity Wesleyan Church. For many years he was an active member of St. Paul’s choir, and was also a member of the vestry. Mr Ibbotson was a keen bowler, being a member of the Dunedin Club, and he was a competitor at the early Caledonian sports meetings. He was also a member of the Masonic Order, and.was always an active worker in friendly society work, at one time being chief ranger for Otago of the Foresters’ Lodge. He was also a provincial grand master of the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows, being, at the time of his death, one of the oldest members of the Order in New Zealand. Mr Ibbotson’s wife died nearly three years ago. and he is survived by a family of five sons—Messrs Arthur, Alfred. Walter, and Percy Ibbotson, of Dunedin, and Mr Herbert Ibbotson, of Nelson —and two daughters. Mrs Rule and Mrs Pidduck. of Dunedin. One son, Richard, was killed at Gallipoli.
