THE CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL
XO THE EDITOR Sir,—lt appears that the Centennial Memorial Committee still a coloured fountain as a local memorial It seems to me entirely inadequate, and I am amazed at the apathetic manner in which the public and local societies seem to be accepting this decision A few weeks ago someone suggested that a suitable memorial be erected in the Town Belt. This, to my mind, seems to be ideal. The Town Belt, as everyone knows, was set aside by the original City Fathers as a public reserve and it seems most fitting that this be used as a setting for any memorial commemorating the centenary of New Zealand.—l am, etc.. Another Citizen. Dunedin. June 6. TO THE EDITOR Sir,—l notice that the City Council has accepted the proposal for the erection of a centennial memorial fountain, either in the Market Reserve or in the Queen's Gardens. To my mind, a fountain has no useful purpose except to be a thing of beauty, and has no connection with early New Zealand. I consider that the idea of the drive through the Town Belt being turned into a memorial drive is a more fitting memorial to the pioneers, and would serve a more useful purpose and be a lasting tribute to them. This proposal. I understand, was put forward by the Dunedin Junior' Chamber of Commerce, and. after very little discussion by any responsible body this excellent suggestion has been allowed to slide. I consider it a great pity that a suggestion such as this should not be brought before the public and carefully discussed. —I am. etc.. Dunedin. June 5 Do Something.
