DUNEDIN PRESBYTERY

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting.of the Dunedin Presbytery was held last night. In the absence of the moderator (the Rev. W. Allan Stevely). the Rev. G. H. Jupp was voted to the chair. . . The cheiirman welcomed the Rev. A. M. Elliffe, who is to act as superintendent of the Presbyterian Social Service Association, to the presbytery. The clerk of the presbytery (the Rev. H. A. Mitchell) referred to the death of the Rev. H. D. Blair, clerk of the Oamaru Presbytery, and it was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to the relatives of the deceased. St. Margaret's College Mr J. M. Dick presented the report and. balance sheet of St. Margaret's College. , He said he was glad to state that they had come through the year with a balanced budget and with a small credit balance of £ll9. The Rev. N. E. Oakley submitted a report from the Finance and Missions Committee dealing with the question of balancing the budget of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. The expenditure on foreign missions, home missions, Maori missions, youth work, the Theological Hall, the Outlook, etc.. came under review in the report. '. A lengthy discussion took place on the report, a suggestion that there should be a retrenchment in the expenditure on foreign missions being strongly combated. . ■ Replying, Mr Oakley said that the committee had considered the question of retrenchment in foreign missions, and that it had no recommendation to make on this point. It had felt that their foreign mission work was an important one, and that retrenchment was not an ideal method of going about things to meet weaknesses in the budget. '■■'.""', .■. It was decided that the report be sent on to 'the Southland Presbytery as an answer to the questions it had submitted. At the last meeting of the assembly of the Presbyterian Church the Southland Presbytery was authorised to obtain the opinions of the presbyteries in the Dominion on methods which might be adopted to enable the budget to be balanced. Duties of Moderator The Rev. H. J. Ryburn, reporting on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Committee, said it was suggested by the committee, among other matters, that the inaugural address of the incoming moderator at the annual meetings of the assembly should be dispensed with. The suggestion of the committee was adopted. * , Brighton Charge Professor Collie was appointed moderator at Brighton for a period of three months.
