Two new clubs, Knox and Wylie’s Crossing, have become affiliated to it since last year and have entered teams in the B Grade competition. Triangle has entered an A team this' year, and in its match with Mosgiel, last year’s winners, is at present winning by six games to five, with one more to be played. It should be mentioned, however, that Mosgiel has been playing without its two top men. In another first round match Y.M.C.A. beat Roslyn by 10 games to two. The union has entered four teams in the association competition this year—two each in the B and C Grades —and all who wish to be included in the teams are asked to forward their names to their club secretaries as soon The following is the draw for the season, a week following the date mentioned being allowed for each match: — A GRADE May 29.—Triangle v. The first of the annual matches between the Dunedin Twenty and Timaru Clubs was played in the Brydone Hall on Saturday night, and resulted in a decisive win for the Twenty Club.

The teams were:— Dunedin Twenty.—Abbott, Lemin, Lawson, Oliphant, Esquilant, Dawe. Misses K. Angell, L. Samson, J. Emshe, J. Leith, E. Hughes and Mrs Lonmer. Timaru.—W. Heads, H. Patemap, J. Gabites. R. Norris, V. Koens, M. Walls, Misses M. Newett, B. Christie, N. Hamlyn E. Norris, N. Gabites, E. Graham. Following are the results:— Men’s Singles—Dunedin Twenty 5 games, Timaru 1 game. . . Men’s Doubles.—Dunedin Twenty 1 game, Timaru 1 game. _ Women’s Singles.—Dunedin Twenty 6 games, Timaru nil. m . Women’s Doubles.—Dunedin Twenty 3 games, Timaru nil. Mixed Doubles—Dunedin Twenty 5 games, Timaru 1 game. A Yankee tournament was held for members not taking part in the match. The ladders have now been put up in the pavilion, and members are advised that the first round of challenge matches must be played by the end ot this week. WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION Important changes to the system of interclub competitions formed the chief subject of discussion at the annual meeting of the Wellington Badminton Association. To develop interest in the A Grade, the meeting decided on a reduction of the personnel of teams, four men and four women, to two men and two women. In lower grades, it is proposed to extend the present B and C grades to five grades, from B'k F. each to have six competina teams of eight players each. The association's executive will have the right to grade the teams in each group. The change in the A Grade will also embrace championship conditions of plav and the possibility of two clubs combining to furnish a team. From the B Grade downwards the method of play in practice in former years will be continued. Entries for the competition totalled 45—18 more than last year—which goes to show that badminton is increasing in popularity in Wellington. Seven teams entered for the A Grade, six each in the B, C. D, and E grades, and seven each in F and G grades.

Wellington players, it is announced, will have the use of the Winter Show Stadium for the full season, and it has been rented to September 2. Competition play was commenced on Tuesday in consequence of the announcement, which was made last week, and this again reflects on the old trouble of Otato’s inability to start until tha local Winter Show is over and tha Brydone Hall free for uninterrupted use. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations are due to Mr C. J. E. Smith, New Plymouth, on his appointment as one of the selectors of the New Zealand team to tour Australia (writes “Shuttle” in the Taranaki Herald). It is a position he has earned. . Mr Smith has also been nominated for the position of manager of the team. The name of the manager will be announced on Saturday, and should the honour be given to Mr Smith it would be a fine reward for the service he has given to the sport in the Dominion. PROMINENT PLAYER % Miss Nancy Fleming (Wellington), the present New Zealand women’s champion, is at present visiting Dunedin, her home town. She has been playing recently at the Balmacewen Club, of which her brother and sister are members. BALMACEWEN CLUB There seems to be some doubt whether the Balmacewen Club will be able to field a team in the A Grade competition thk year, The committee was unable to come to a decision at a meeting held earlier this week > and met again last night to make a final decision. The committee feels that there are not sufficient players of A Grade standard in the club to warrant an entry into the competition, but at the same time does not want to do an injustice to the three players who are of that ranking—Misses E. Buchler, O. Erridge and Mr J. Ferguson. Whitcombes for Badminton*
